Before there was Dungeons and Dragons - Part Five: The Legacy of Chainmail

 


More than half a century after its publication, Chainmail occupies a unique place in gaming history. Although it began life as a medieval miniatures wargame, its Fantasy Supplement helped create an entirely new form of entertainment that would become known as the role-playing game.

Overshadowed by Its Successor

The phenomenal success of Dungeons & Dragons inevitably pushed Chainmail into the background. Many gamers know the name only because the original 1974 rules referred readers to its combat system. Yet without Chainmail, the first role-playing game would almost certainly have looked very different.

A Collector's Treasure

Today original editions of Chainmail are prized by collectors of gaming history. Early Guidon Games printings, first-edition Fantasy Supplements and surviving TSR editions are all highly sought after, reflecting both their rarity and their importance in the development of tabletop gaming.

Influence Beyond D&D

The ideas pioneered by Gygax, Perren and Arneson continue to influence modern game design. Character progression, fantasy worlds, campaign settings and collaborative storytelling have become defining features of an industry enjoyed by millions of people around the globe.

Remembering the Beginning

When people celebrate the history of role-playing games, it is easy to focus solely on Dungeons & Dragons. Looking back at Chainmail reminds us that revolutionary ideas often begin as small experiments shared among passionate enthusiasts.

Its enduring legacy is not simply that it came first, but that it demonstrated fantasy gaming could become something entirely new. Every modern tabletop role-playing game, whether directly or indirectly, traces part of its ancestry to those modest rulebooks published more than fifty years ago.
